CHRONIC pain is a common debilitating ailment. Those who suffer from it are often left exhausted by the pain and can feel confused and stressed about how to get some relief.
The causes of chronic pain are numerous. They include: arthritis, rheumatism, cancer, accidents and sports injuries. This article will give you a few suggestions on how to better manage chronic pain, in conjunction with the management strategies you have from your doctor.Natural therapies offer a range of supportive techniques. Many of them, once learned, can be practised at home.Daily meditation may reduce both pain and stress levels. A qualified teacher can get you started but daily practice is necessary to achieve good results. Practise positive thinking to reduce stress and to help the body release natural endorphins which reduce pain and elevate mood. Yoga and Tai Chi are both excellent. Also, half an hour of deep relaxation one to two times a day can give a lot of relief.Natural therapies can also help you with treatment regimes. Have regular treatments in one or two of the following body therapies: massage, acupuncture or osteopathy. It is often useful to have a regular maintenance plan of treatments, mostly weekly, for bouts of severe pain and every three to four weeks during less intense times. Homeopaths or herbalists can prescribe appropriate remedies for your condition. It is important to get a good balance of rest and movement when you suffer from chronic pain. This means getting enough movement to mobilise the body but not so much as to stir it all up.Don't isolate yourself by coping with it all on your own. Get support, talk to experts, ask their advice and do what feels right for you.'Sylvia Reitsma is a naturopath at the East West Health Centre.
